Study shows the potential of a TCM essential oil for alleviating depression and anxiety

Living with a mental health disorder is no easy task. Although they are not as visible as physical conditions, they can be just as bad or at times even worse. Over the years, the number of people who suffer from mental health problems continues to rise. SuHeXiang is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat seizures, loss of consciousness, and stroke. Moreover, there are recent studies showing that this essential oil protects against Alzheimer’s and its associated memory loss. It was also observed to regulate functions of the central nervous system by utilizing the gamma-aminobutyric acid pathways. Based on these, the authors of the study hypothesized that SuHeXiang has neuroprotective properties that could work against depression and anxiety.

In this study, which was published in the Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin, the researchers determined the antidepressant and anti-anxiety activities of SuHeXiang in mice with stress-induced depression. They administered the essential oil through inhalation, which was done for either 10 or 30 minutes. The researchers used different experiments to observe the mice for anxiety and depression-like behaviors. From there, they observed that inhalation of SuHeXiang significantly reduced anxiety and depression-like behaviors.

The authors of the study also assessed the effects of inhalation on the serum profile of the mice. They saw that those treated with SuHeXiang had lower levels of pro-inflammatory proteins, which is beneficial since brain inflammation is associated with depression and other neurological disorders. In addition, the researchers also observed lower levels of thrombopoietin and angiogenin, which are involved in platelet activity and the formation of blood vessels respectively. Similar to inflammation, these two processes also cause depression.

From this study, the researchers concluded that SuHeXiang has potent antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects, which can be attributed to its ability to reduce inflammation and platelet activity.   • Bathe: Combine four to eight drops of marjoram essential oil with one teaspoon of a carrier oil such as coconut oil to a bath. A 15-miniute treatment can relieve achy muscles.
  • Massage: Use 10 drops of marjoram essential oil mixed with a carrier oil to apply directly on the skin surface of aches and pains. Coconut oil is a great carrier oil for aching muscles, as it does not oxidize and is light in texture. Massage one to two drops on the reflex points of the feet daily to promote good cardiovascular health.
  • Compress: Add two drops of marjoram essential oil to a hot compress to relieve cramps.

Marjoram Essential Oil Recipes

1. Bedtime Bath Blend

  • ½ cup milk
  • 3 drops lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops roman chamomile essential oil
  • 1 drop clary sage essential oil
  • 1 drop marjoram essential oil
  • 1 drop ylang-ylang essential oil

In a small bowl of milk, add all of the essential oils and stir well. Add mixture to a warm bath and soak until water becomes cool.

2. Anti-Cramping Bath Blend

  • ¼ cup milk
  • 3 drops basil essential oil
  • 3 drops marjoram essential oil
  • 3 drops peppermint essential oil

In a small bowl of milk, add all of the essential oils and stir well. Add mixture to a warm bath and soak until water becomes cool. Repeat until cramping is alleviated.

3. Massage Blend

  • 5 ml jojoba carrier oil
  • 3 drops basil essential oil
  • 3 drops marjoram essential oil
  • 3 drops rosemary essential oil

In a small bowl of the jojoba oil, add the essential oils and stir well. Apply to abdomen using fingertips to massage onto skin.

Marjoram Essential Oil: Possible Side Effects

As with the use of any essential oil, it is important to understand any possible side effects that can be experienced.

  • Always perform a skin test by placing the oil alone, or infused with a carrier oil, on a small patch of skin to check for allergic or hypersensitive reactions.
  • Use only in food with young children, as more research is needed to determine if it is safe to use medicinally in children.
  • Marjoram is recommended as likely to be safe for consumption in food and possibly safe as an oral medication for most adults.
  • As it is an emmenagogue, marjoram could stimulate bleeding during pregnancy, and is not recommended for use by pregnant women or those trying to conceive.
  • Nursing mothers should also avoid using marjoram for medicinal purposes, since there is insufficient research on safety.
  • Marjoram is not intended for long-term medicinal use as evidence shows an increase in cancer cases with prolonged use.

Additionally, several health conditions may be aggravated with the use of marjoram and precautions must be taken.

  • Hemophilia: Those with bleeding disorders such as hemophilia may experience increased bleeding and a reduction in the clotting ability of the blood.
  • Bradycardia: A slow heart rate and the use of marjoram may be life-threatening, as the oil can reduce the heart rate even further.
  • Plant Allergies: Sensitivity or allergy to any member of the Lamiaceae plant family, such as lavender, mint, oregano, sage, or basil, may worsen symptoms with use of marjoram.
  • Diabetes: Marjoram may lower blood pressure, which could have an adverse effect on diabetics. Blood sugar levels should be closely monitored to avoid hypoglycemia.
  • Digestive Tract: A gastrointestinal tract blockage may worsen with the use of marjoram, as it may cause intestinal congestion.
  • Urinary Tract: Any obstruction within the urinary tract may become worse with use of marjoram as it may promote excess secretions.
  • Ulcers: Marjoram can increase the level of gastric juices in the stomach, which will irritate and worsen any existing ulcers.
  • Lung Conditions: While marjoram may help regulate breathing patterns of those with asthma and emphysema, the herb can also promote excess fluid production, which worsens lung conditions.
  • Surgery: As there is a high risk of bleeding during and after most surgical procedures, it is advised to avoid use of marjoram two weeks before a surgical appointment.

Marjoram essential oil has been extracted from the plant since ancient times to treat and prevent health conditions, diseases, and disorders. Oregano essential oil kills antibiotic resistant superbugs “without any side effects” urges scientist … Pharma-controlled media SILENT

It is no longer a secret that antibiotic-resistant bacteria, commonly known as superbugs, are on the rise. This has many in the medical community gravely concerned. One of the greatest causes fueling this epidemic is the indiscriminate overuse of antibiotics.

In 2015, in an attempt to address the problem, the White House released a plan to half inappropriate outpatient use of antibiotics by 2020. This is an ambitious and laudable goal, but with 2020 just around the corner, one that is not likely to come to fruition.

The problem of antibiotic overuse is incredibly widespread. In fact, a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and partner organizations, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), recently confirmed that as many as 30 percent of all antibiotics prescribed in the U.S. are totally unnecessary. In analyzing data from doctors’ rooms and emergency facilities around the country, the researchers determined that about 47 million excess prescriptions are written every year for conditions that are totally unaffected by antibiotics, most especially viral respiratory tract infections. In an effort to placate patients who feel they need to be given something for their symptoms, when in fact the only treatment is time and their body’s own immune system, doctors put patients at risk of potentially dangerous allergic reactions and the sometimes fatal pathogen, Clostridium difficile.

But there is a natural solution to the problem that Stavros Saripanidis, consultant in obstetrics and gynecology in Thessaloniki, Greece, wants to remind colleagues of: oil of oregano. Saripanidis calls oil of oregano an “extremely powerful broad spectrum fungicidal and bactericidal” that has no side effects. And best of all, unlike antibiotics, it has never caused bacterial resistance. Of course, as is only to be expected, the mainstream media has done nothing to promote this natural antibiotic.

So, what makes oil of oregano so powerful? Its active ingredient, carvacrol.

In 2012, researchers out of Utrecht University in the Netherlands published a study in the journal PLoS One, in which they examined the antimicrobial properties of carvacrol against the most common foodborne pathogen, Campylobacter jejuni. They concluded that carvacrol effectively blocked the damaging effects of eukaryotic cells without interfering with healthy cell function. They noted: “These results broaden the spectrum of antimicrobial activity of carvacrol and support the potential of the compound for use in novel infection prevention strategies.”

Another 2012 study, this time by researchers from the University of Connecticut and published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology, looked at the effects of three plant-based antimicrobials, one of which was carvacrol, against another foodborne pathogen, Listeria monocytogenes (LM). All three were found to be effective in vitro, and their results suggested that these antimicrobials could potentially be used to control LM infection, though they noted that in vivo studies were needed to validate the results.

A third study, conducted by the University of Arizona in 2010, and published in the Journal of Food Protection, examined the effects of carvacrol and another natural antimicrobial against antibiotic-resistant Salmonella. Their study found that both antimicrobials inactivated all pathogens.

Other health benefits of carvacrol include reducing pain and inflammation. It is also a very effective natural treatment for respiratory treatments and asthma.

Those suffering from yeast infections, or Candida albicans, will find it to be a very effective natural remedy.

Another problem that haunts millions is cholesterol. It is the oxidation of LDL cholesterol that causes a build-up and the narrowing of arteries. Oil of oregano prevents this process, thereby contributing to normal cholesterol levels.

And finally, a study conducted in Georgia and published in the journal Georgian Medical News, found that carvacrol effectively lowers blood sugar for those suffering from diabetes, without any damaging side effects.

There are clearly plenty of sound reasons to always keep oil of oregano in your arsenal of natural medications.

But as with all pharmaceuticals, these drugs can carry side effects or even serious risks, particularly if used long term.

Which oils to use

Many essential oils have overlapping effects, so you can either choose the oil that you best like the smell of (or that is least expensive or easiest to find), or you can combine multiple oils to boost their effectiveness, or both.

Eucalyptus oil is a natural topical analgesic, which is why it is included as an ingredient in many medicated chest and muscle rubs. Part of its painkilling power may come from its effect of dilating blood vessels and increasing circulation — which also promotes the body’s natural healing processes.

Peppermint oil contains menthol, another common ingredient in medicated chest and muscle rubs. Menthol and other peppermint oil components are anti-inflammatories, thus helping bring down the pain and swelling associated with arthritis.

Rosemary oil combines many of the properties of eucalyptus and peppermint oils. It is an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic that also helps improve circulation.

Birch oil is also anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic. It also contains the painkillers methyl salicylate and salicylic acid, chemicals closely related to aspirin. Like most essential oils, birch is also a potent antiseptic.

The final oil on the list is not a painkiller or anti-inflammatory, and is better known for its effects on mood: lavender. But like eucalyptus and rosemary oil, lavender oil helps increase circulation, which leads to improved healing and reduced pain. Lavender’s ability to promote calm, relaxation and sleep also help mobilize your body’s natural healing abilities.

How to use essential oils for arthritis

With only a very few exceptions, essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin. Instead, they should be mixed with a “carrier oil” such as jojoba, sesame, olive or sweet almond. These can be food-grade oils from your grocery store, or cosmetics-grade oils purchased from a natural health or grocery store.

One of the best essential oil treatments for arthritis is a full-body bath soak. This consists of taking a few drops of essential oils, mixing them into a small amount of carrier oil, then pouring the entire mixture into a bathtub full of hot water. If you want, you can also add 2 to 3 cups of Epsom salts for added effectiveness.

If you want a more focused treatment on a particular part of your body, you can simply use your essential oil-carrier oil blend (about 10 drops essential oil per ounce of carrier oil) as a massage oil, and apply it directly to the troublesome spot. Or you can mix 4 drops of essential oil directly into a pint of either hot or icy water, to use for a hot or cold compress. Soak up the water-oil blend with a small towel, then apply the compress to the painful area for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the compress has reached body temperature.

Heat is recommended by most health professionals for maximum promotion of blood flow and the body’s natural healing processes. Cold, however, can provide more short-term relief by temporarily reducing pain and swelling. To get the benefits of both, you can alternate between hot and cold compresses.
