The eight year anniversary of the triple meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear facility passed mostly without comment in mainstream media circles. In spite of ongoing radiological contamination that will continue to spread and threaten human health for lifetimes to come, other stories dominate the international news cycle. The climate change conundrum, serious though it may be, seemingly crowds out all other clear and present environmental hazards.
As part of efforts to normalize this historic event and cover it up in its magnitude, the Japanese government has invested considerable financial, public relations and other resources into what they are billing the ‘Recovery Olympics‘ set to take place in a year’s time in Tokyo.
But Helen Caldicott warns that the dangers associated with Fukushima have not gone away and remain a cause for concern.
Dr. Helen Caldicott has been an author, physician and one of the world’s leading anti-nuclear campaigners. She helped to reinvigorate the group of Physicians for Social Responsibility, acting as president from 1978 to 1983. Since its founding in 2001 she served as president of the US based Nuclear Policy Research Institute later called Beyond Nuclear which initiates symposia and educational projects aimed at informing the public about the dangers of nuclear power, nuclear weapons, and nuclear war. And she is the editor of the 2014 book, Crisis Without End: The Medical and Ecological Consequences of the Fukushima Nuclear Catastrophe.
On the week marking the eighth anniversary of the Fukushima meltdowns, the Global Research News Hour radio program, hosted by Michael Welch, reached out to Dr. Caldicott to get her expert opinion on the health dangers posed by the most serious nuclear disaster since, at least, the 1986 Chernobyl event.
Global Research: Now the Japanese government is preparing to welcome visitors to Japan for the 2020 Olympic Games, and coverage of the 8th anniversary of the Fukushima disaster is hardly, it seems to me, registered given the significant radiological and other dangers that you cited and your authors cited in your 2014 book, Crisis Without End. Now it’s been more than four years since that book came out. I was hoping you could update our listenership on what is currently being recognized as the main health threats in 2019, perhaps not registered in the book, that you’re currently looking at in relation to the Fukushima meltdown.
Helen Caldicott: Well it’s difficult because the Japanese government has authorized really only examination of thyroid cancer. Now thyroid cancer is caused by radioactive iodine and there were many, many cases of that after Chernobyl. And already, they’ve looked at children under the age of 18 in the Fukushima prefecture at the time of the accident, and … how many children… 100…no 201 by June 18 last year… 201 had developed thyroid cancer. Some cancers had metastasized. The incidence of thyroid cancer in that population normally is 1 per million. So obviously it’s an epidemic of thyroid cancer and it’s just starting now.
What people need to understand is the latent period of carcinogenesis, ie the time after exposure to radiation when cancers develop is any time from 3 years to 80 years. And so it’s a very, very long period. Thyroid cancers appear early. Leukemia appears about 5 to 10 years later. They’re not looking for leukemia. Solid cancers of every organ, or any organ as such appear about 15 years later and continue and in fact the Hibakusha from the Hiroshima and Nagasaki who are still alive are still developing cancers in higher than normal numbers.
The Japanese government has told doctors that they are not to talk to their patients about radiation and illnesses derived thereof, and in fact if the doctors do do that, they might lose their funding from the government. The IAEA, the International Atomic Energy Agency interestingly set up a hospital – a cancer hospital – in Fukushima along with the Fukushima University for people with cancer, which tells you everything.
So there’s a huge, huge cover up. I have been to Japan twice and particularly to Fukushima and spoken to people there and the parents are desperate to hear the truth even if it’s not good truth. And they thanked me for telling them the truth. So it’s an absolute medical catastrophe I would say, and a total cover up to protect the nuclear industry and all its ramifications.
GR: Now, are we talking about some of the, the contamination that happened 8 years ago or are we talking about ongoing emissions from, for example–
HC: Well there are ongoing emissions into the air consistently, number one. Number two, a huge amount of water is being stored –over a million gallons in tanks at the site. That water is being siphoned off from the reactor cores, the damaged melted cores. Water is pumped consistently every day, every hour, to keep the cores cool in case they have another melt. And that water, of course, is extremely contaminated.
Now they say they’ve filtered out the contaminants except for the tritium which is part of the water molecule, but they haven’t. There’s strontium, cesium, and many other elements in that water – it’s highly radioactive – and because there isn’t enough room to build more tanks, they’re talking about emptying all that water into the Pacific Ocean and the fishermen are very, very upset. The fish already being caught off Fukushima, some are obviously contaminated. But this will be a disaster.
Water comes down from the mountains behind the reactors, flows underneath the reactors into the sea and always has. And when the reactors were in good shape, the water was fine, didn’t get contaminated. But now the three molten cores in contact with that water flowing under the reactors and so the water flowing into the Pacific is very radioactive and that’s a separate thing from the million gallons or more in those tanks.
They put up a refrigerated wall of frozen dirt around the reactors to prevent that water from the mountains flowing underneath the reactors, which has cut down the amount of water flowing per day from 500 tons to about a hundred and fifty. But of course, if they lose electricity, that refrigeration system is going to fail, and it’s a transient thing anyway so it’s ridiculous. In terms… So over time the Pacific is going to become more and more radioactive.
They talk about decommissioning and removing those molten cores. When robots go in and try and have a look at them, their wiring just melts and disappears. They’re extraordinarily radioactive. No human can go near them because they would die within 48 hours from the radiation exposure. They will never, and I quote never, decommission those reactors. They will never be able to stop the water coming down from the mountains. And so, the truth be known, it’s an ongoing global radiological catastrophe which no one really is addressing in full.
GR: Do we have a better reading on, for example the thyroids, but also leukemia incubation—
HC: No they’re not looking–well, leukemia they’re not looking for leukemia…
GR: Just thyroid
HC: They’re not charting it. So the only cancer they’re looking at is thyroid cancer and that’s really high, and you know it’s at 201 have already been diagnosed and some have metastasized. And a very tight lid is being kept on any other sort of radiation related illnesses and leukemia and the like. All the other cancers and the like, and leukemia is so… It’s not just a catastrophe it’s a…
GR: …a cover up
HC: Yeah. I can’t really explain how I feel medically about it. It’s just hideous.
GR: Well I have a brother who’s a physician, who was pointing to well we should maybe, the World Health Organization is a fairly authoritative body of research for all of the indicators and epidemiological aspects of this, but you seem to suggest the World Health Organization may not be that reliable in light of the fact that they are partnered with the IAEA. Is that my understanding…?
HC: Correct. They signed a document, I think in ‘59, with the IAEA that they would not report any medical effects of radiological disasters and they’ve stuck to that. So they are in effect in this area part of the International Atomic Energy Agency whose mission is to promote nuclear power. So don’t even think about the WHO. it’s really obscene.
GR: So what would… the incentive would be simply that they got funding?
HC: I don’t know. I really don’t know but they sold themselves to the devil.
GR: That’s pretty incredible. So there’s also the issue of biomagnification in the oceans, where you have radioactive debris, hundreds of tons of this radioactive water getting into the oceans and biomagnifying up through the food chain, so these radioactive particles can get inside our bodies. Could you speak to what you anticipate to see, what you would anticipate, whether it’s recorded by World Health authorities or not, what we could expect to see in the years ahead in terms of the illnesses that manifest themselves?
HC: Well number one, Fukushima is a very agricultural prefecture. Beautiful, beautiful peaches, beautiful food, and lots of rice. And the radiation spread far and wide through the Fukushima prefecture, and indeed they have been plowing up millions and millions of tons of radioactive dirt and storing it in plastic bags all over the prefecture. The mountains are highly radioactive and every time it rains, down comes radiation with the water. So the radiation – the elements. And there are over 200 radioactive elements made in a nuclear reactor. Some have lives of seconds and some have lives of millions of years or lasts for millions of years will I say. So there are many many isotopes, long-lasting isotopes – cesium, strontium, tritium is another one – but many, many on the soil in Fukushima.
And what happens is – you talked about biomagnification – when the plants take up the water from the soil, they take up the cesium which is a potassium analog – it resembles potassium. Strontium 90 resembles calcium and the like. And these elements get magnified by orders of magnitude in the rice and in the plants. And so when you eat food that is grown in Fukushima, the chances are it’s going to be relatively radioactive.
They’ve been diluting radioactive rice with non-radioactive rice to make it seem a bit better. Now, into the ocean go these isotopes as well, and the algae bio-magnify them by – you know -ten to a hundred times or more. And then the crustaceans eat the algae, bio-magnify it more. The little fish eat the crustaceans, the big fish eat the little fish and the like. And tuna found in – off the coast of California some years ago contained isotopes from Fukushima. Also fish, being caught on the west coast of California contained some of these isotopes. So, it’s an ongoing bio-magnification catastrophe.
And the thing is that you can’t even taste, smell or see radioactive elements in your food. They’re invisible. And it takes a long time for cancers to occur. And you can’t identify a particular cancer caused by a particular substance or isotope. You can only identify that problem by doing epidemiological studies comparing irradiated people with non-irradiated people to see what the cancer levels are and that data comes from Hiroshima and Nagasaki and many, many, many other studies.
GR: Chernobyl as well, no?
HC: Oh, Chernobyl! Well, a wonderful book was produced by the, uh, Russians, and published by the New York Academy of Sciences, called Chernobyl with over 5000 on the ground studies of children and diseases in Belarus and the Ukraine, and all over Europe. And by now over a million people have already died from the Chernobyl disaster. And many diseases have been caused by that, including premature aging in children, microcephaly in babies, very small heads, diabetes, leukemia, I mean, I could go on and on.
Um, and those diseases which have been very well described in that wonderful book, um, which everyone should read, are not being addressed or identified or looked for in the Fukushima or Japanese population.
May I say that parts of Tokyo are extremely radioactive. People have been measuring the dirt from rooves of apartments, from the roadway, from vacuum cleaner dust. And some of these samples, they’re so radioactive that they would classify to be buried in radioactive waste facilities in America. So, that’s number one.
Number two, to have the Olympics in Fukushima just defies imagination. And uh, some of the areas where the athletes are going to be running, the dust and dirt there has been measured, and it’s highly radioactive. So, this is Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan, who set this up to – as a sort of way to obscure what Fukushima really means. And those young athletes, you know, who are – and young people are much more sensitive to radiation, developing cancers later than older people – it’s just a catastrophe waiting to happen.
GR: Dr. Caldicott…
HC:They’re calling it the radioactive Olympics!
GR: (Chuckle). Is there anything that people can do, you know, whether they live in Japan or, say, the west coast of North America to mitigate the effects that this disaster has had, and may still be having eight years later?
HC: Yes. Do not eat any Japanese food because you don’t know where it’s sourced. Do not eat fish from Japan, miso, rice, you name it. Do not eat Japanese food. Period. Um, fish caught off the west coast of Canada and America, well, they’re not testing the fish so I don’t know what you’d do. Um, I mean, most of it’s probably not radioactive but you don’t know because you can’t taste it.
Um they’ve closed down the air-borne radioactive measuring instruments off the west coast of America, uh, but that’s pretty bad, because there still could be another huge accident at those reactors.
For instance, if there’s another large earthquake, number one, all those tanks would be destroyed and the water would pour into the Pacific. Number two, there could be another meltdown, a release – huge release of radiation, um, from the damaged reactors. So, things are very tenuous, but they’re not just tenuous now. They’re going to be tenuous forever.
Government authorities in Japan have announced new plans to start dumping highly radioactive wastewater from the failed Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility directly into the Pacific Ocean.
Though the amount of radiation in the water far exceeds legally-permitted levels, according to the plant’s operator and documents reviewed by the U.K.’s Telegraph, there’s apparently no other place to put it at the site, which is on the verge of seeing its storage capacity completely maxed out.
Reports indicate that approximately 1.09 million tons of contaminated water currently being stored inside 900 tanks at Fukushima will soon be drained in the Pacific in order to make more space for new water, a move that’s sparking outrage among local residents and a number of environmental organizations that worry about what the vast contamination will do to the world’s largest body of water.
TEPCO, Japanese government have clearly been lying about “safe” Fukushima wastewater
The announcement is sure to be puzzling for anyone who believes the narrative that’s long been conveyed by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) that nuclear wastewater at the Fukushima site is “safe,” containing only small levels of the radioactive contaminant tritium.
It also brings up questions about the repeated assurances from the Japanese government that a so-called “Advanced Liquid Processing System,” or ALPS, developed by the nuclear arm of Hitachi Ltd., has been effectively removing all other radioactive materials to “non-detect” levels, which doesn’t seem to be the case.

The Telegraph says it’s obtained documents from a source in Japan’s government revealing that ALPS “has consistently failed to eliminate a cocktail of other radioactive elements, including iodine, ruthenium, rhodium, antimony, tellurium, cobalt and strontium.”
When asked about these documents, Hitachi reportedly declined to comment on the performance of its ALPS technology. The Japanese government similarly refused to respond to multiple requests for comment about the seeming disparity.
Like we’ve been saying all along: Fukushima is a MAJOR coverup
According to The Telegraph, other “restricted” documents suggest that the arm of the Japanese government responsible for handling the Fukushima disaster didn’t even know that ALPS was “malfunctioning,” and not actually removing harmful radionuclides to “non-detect” levels. So there’s no telling what the actual levels are of nuclear radiation being dumped from the site into the Pacific.
A study conducted by the Kahoko Shinpo newspaper found in 2017 that 45 of 84 water samples collected from near the Fukushima site tested extremely high for iodine 129 and ruthenium 106, at levels far above what’s considered “acceptable” even by liberally-defined government standards.
Keep in mind that iodine 129 is known to cause thyroid cancer, and has a half life of 15.7 million years – meaning it’s not going anywhere once released into the environment. Ruthenium 106 is similarly carcinogenic and high-risk when its comes to its environmental pervasiveness.
And it was just last month that TEPCO was forced to admit that a shocking 80 percent of its stored wastewater still contains radioactive substances at levels far beyond what was established by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
“Tepco has now admitted that levels of strontium 90, for example, are more than 100 times above legally permitted levels in 65,000 tons of water that has been through the ALPS cleansing system and are 20,000 times above levels set by the government in several storage tanks at the site,” explains The Telegraph.
What this all suggests, of course – and affirming what we’ve been saying all along – is that TEPCO has for years been lying about the true level of radioactive contamination at the Fukushima site. There’s also no telling to what degree harmful radiation has already been dumped into the Pacific Ocean, only to spread far and wide across the globe.

A nuclear power plant in Southern California that was shut down in 2012 continues to leak radioactive material and poses a threat to nearby communities.
The aging San Onofre, located in San Clemente, CA, was shut down in 2012 amid a leak that occurred due to malpractice. According to a report released in 2016, the plant “operated the reactor outside the allowable limits for pressure and temperature, causing the radiation leak that shut down the facility for good,” the San Diego Tribune noted. The shutdown also launched extensive investigations that implicated both the power company and state regulators.
Though the plant is out of operation, it still stores 3.6 million pounds of lethal radioactive waste, and according to a worker who blew the whistle on the plant just last week, a near catastrophe just occurred. As local outlet the Dana Pointer reported, plant worker David Fritch explained what happened at a public meeting:
On 3 August 2018, a 100-ton canister filled with highly radioactive nuclear waste was being ‘downloaded’ into a temporary transport carrier to be moved a few hundred yards from inside the plant to a storage silo buried near the world-famous San Onofre beach. As the thin-walled canister was being lowered into the transport cask, it snagged on a guide ledge four feet from the top. Crane operators were unaware that the canister had stopped descending and the rigging went completely slack, leaving the full weight of the heavy canister perched on that ledge by about a quarter-inch.
Had the ledge not held for the hour or more it took workers to realize and address the error, the thin-walled canister of highly toxic nuclear waste would have fallen 18 feet to the ground below.
Each canister reportedly has as much radiation as was released during the infamous Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
Fritch says the staff is too small — and also undertrained. According to an article published in the Los Angeles Times this week by Steve Chapple, an author, journalist, and fellow at the Samuel Lawrence Foundation:
The idea is to bury the spent fuel on site, about 100 feet from the ocean and just a few feet above the water table. Edison has already begun transferring the waste from cooling pools into specially designed steel canisters. The containers are prone to corrosion and cracking, and cannot be monitored or repaired. Work crews even discovered a loose bolt inside one of the canisters earlier this year.
As ocean levels keep rising, Chapple says, seawater will come closer and closer to the canisters. Further, “if hairline cracks or pinholes in the containers were to let in even a little bit of air, it could make the waste explosive.”
Further, San Onofre is located directly on an earthquake fault line in an area with a record of tsunamis.
San Juan Capistrano Councilwoman Pam Patterson told President Trump at a roundtable discussion in May that San Onofre is a “Fukushima waiting to happen.” She also expressed concern that the facility, which is a no-fly zone but secured mainly by armed guards, could be a target of a terror attack, noting that terrorists targeted nuclear power plants in addition to the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
Any time of disaster would have far-reaching effects. Shortly after the plant shut down, former prime minister of Japan, Naoto Kan testified in San Diego, noting that during the Fukushima meltdown, he was prepared to evacuate not just Tokyo, but regions as far as 160 miles from the plant. Downtown Los Angeles is only 62 miles away from San Onofre and 50 miles from San Diego. Worse, there are no state or federal evacuation plans in the event of a catastrophe.
Chapple says that while solutions include moving the waste to a location 80 feet higher than the current plant, which is by the beach, or “maintain a cooling pool on site for emergency transfer efforts in the event of a cracked canister or terrorist attack,” these are all short-term solutions. As of last year, Edison was working on a plan to bury the nuclear waste, but Chapple believes the only way to truly resolve the problem is for Edison to develop storage technology that is not prone to severe leaks.
Though Edison has started that process, earlier this year San Onofre officials found a defect in the design created by Holtec, a contractor whose workers were responsible for the accident earlier this month.
Iodine is an essential nutrient, meaning that the human body requires it for many essential functions but cannot synthesize it on its own. Without enough iodine, the thyroid gland cannot produce the thyroid hormones that regulate growth, metabolism and other important processes in the body. When that happens, energy levels plummet, hormones become imbalanced, and physical and emotional states are affected. Here we’ll take a closer look at everything you need to know about iodine and its special relationship with the thyroid.
Why Is Iodine Essential for Your Thyroid?
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland situated at the front of your neck below the larynx (voice box). Dubbed the “master gland,” your thyroid plays a critical role in your health. The thyroid gland needs iodine to manufacture thyroid hormones, most notably triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). The shortened names refer to the number of iodine molecules these hormones contain, T3 has three iodine molecules T4 has four. T3 and T4 regulate your body’s metabolism. Heart, brain, and muscle function all depend on thyroid hormones like T3 and T4.
Iodine and Thyroid Disorders
According to the American Thyroid Association, roughly 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease, and about 12 percent of the total US population can expect thyroid disease to arise sometime during their lifetime. For those currently afflicted with a thyroid disorder, more than half aren’t aware of it.
Iodine and Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism refers to an underactive thyroid that does not produce enough thyroid hormones. Nearly five percent of the U.S. population over twelve years of age has this endocrine disorder, with a significantly higher incidence in women than in men and people over the age of 60. Symptoms, which may be mild at the onset, include:
- Unexplained weight gain
- Intolerance to cold temperatures
- Brittle nails
- Muscle and joint pain
- Goiter (swelling of the thyroid gland)
- Low blood pressure
- Elevated cholesterol
Without intervention, symptoms may later progress to include:
- Irregular menstrual periods
- Puffy face, hands or feet
- Impaired hearing
- Dry skin and hair
- Thinning hair
While genetic factors, congenital disabilities, autoimmune disorders such as Hashimoto’s disease, thyroid surgery, radiation treatment, pregnancy, or the long-term use of certain medications can also cause hypothyroidism, iodine deficiency is the most common cause throughout the world.[3, 4, 5]
Where iodine-rich foods are widely available, the most common cause of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroiditis, an inflammation of the thyroid gland. Secondary hypothyroidism is the term used to refer to an underactive thyroid due to the failure of the pituitary gland to signal thyroid hormone production through the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).
Iodine and Hyperthyroidism
An overactive thyroid causes hyperthyroidism. With this condition, the thyroid releases excess thyroxine (T4), leading to a metabolic imbalance. Less than two percent of the U.S. population has this condition. Women are 2-10 times more likely to develop hyperthyroidism than men. Individuals over the age of 60 are also at increased risk, as well as people with type I diabetes, adrenal insufficiency, thyroiditis, ovarian or testicular cancer, a family history of thyroid disease, or pernicious anemia due to a deficiency or malabsorption of vitamin B-12.[7, 8] The most common cause of hyperthyroidism in the US is, however, Graves’ disease, an autoimmune condition that occurs 7-8 times more frequently in women than in men.
Because thyroxine regulates metabolism and how the body uses energy in virtually every cell in the body, symptoms that are likely to present early on include fatigue, nervousness, increased appetite, irregular or rapid heartbeat, difficulty sleeping, mood swings, trembling, muscle weakness and unexplained weight loss.[7, 8] Other symptoms of an overactive thyroid include:
- Menstrual disorders
- Flushing of the skin
- Intolerance to heat
- Hair loss
- Protruding eyes
Left unchecked, hyperthyroidism may increase the risk of heart disease, stroke or osteoporosis. Hyperthyroidism can also cause Graves’ ophthalmopathy, a condition that may result in eye pain, light sensitivity, double vision and, in rare cases, loss of vision.
For people with hyperthyroidism, iodine reduces hormonal secretion, although scientists do not yet understand precisely how or why. Studies found that injections of iodine in hyperthyroid patients successfully slowed down thyroxine production. Sometimes radioactive iodine is used in severe cases. Treatment depends on how severe the condition has become so always consult your healthcare provider for guidance.
How Much Iodine Do I Need?
For healthy individuals, the amount of iodine you need each day depends on your age and is measured in micrograms (mcg). According to the Office of Dietary Supplements of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the daily recommended amount of iodine in micrograms (mcg) is as follows:
- Infants birth-6 months: 110 mcg (if not breastfeeding)
- Infants 7-12 months: 130 mcg (if not breastfeeding)
- 1-8 years: 90 mcg (if not breastfeeding)
- 9-13 years: 120 mcg
- Teens >14 and adults: 150 mcg
- Pregnant women: 220 mcg
- Breastfeeding women: 290 mcg
Given the range of critical functions that iodine supports, many healthcare specialists believe that these recommendations are too low. Note that if you have a thyroid condition, whether hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, your healthcare provider’s specific recommendations for iodine intake may vary from these standard recommendations. In some cases, taking iodine can worsen your condition so be sure to check with your provider.
How Iodine Deficiency Affects the Thyroid
Iodine deficiency is a serious issue and the number one cause of preventable disabilities in the world. The World Health Organization estimates that around 1 billion people will suffer from some form of health issue due to a lack of iodine in the diet, and approximately 40% of the world’s population is at risk for iodine deficiency.[13, 14, 15] Although table salt has been iodized since 1924, iodine deficiency is rising again in the Western world. A 1998 report found that iodine deficiencies had increased in the United States during the previous 20 years, likely due to dietary changes.
Insufficient iodine intake directly affects the thyroid since T3 and T4 hormones require this essential mineral. If you do not have enough iodine, you can not produce enough of these two thyroid hormones. These iodine-containing hormones are used for brain, heart, muscle, and bone maintenance and functioning, as well as metabolism – turning food nutrients into the energy needed for the body and its organs to work properly.
How Do I Know if I am Iodine Deficient?
While thyroid function is easily measured, there is no specific blood test to determine how much iodine is circulating in your body. However, since the kidneys eliminate iodine, healthcare providers can assess iodine intake by measuring its concentration in urine. Doctors can conduct blood tests for levels of thyroid hormone and thyroid-stimulating antibody immunoglobulin (TSI) levels. An iodine deficiency is suspected when thyroid hormones fall below a normal range. The appearance of a goiter also indicates either a deficiency or overabundance of iodine.
Iodine, the Thyroid, and Pregnancy
During pregnancy, elevated levels of estrogen and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) hormones trigger an increased release of thyroid hormones, which are required for the baby’s proper brain and nervous system development. Rarely, pregnancy-induced Graves’ disease will send the thyroid into overdrive, leading to hyperthyroidism. Symptoms include fatigue, difficulty sleeping, and irritability and physicians and pregnant women often overlook them as normal pregnancy concerns. Hyperthyroidism during pregnancy can lead to high blood pressure (preeclampsia), anemia, low birth weight and other conditions.
Hyperthyroidism can also occur after giving birth. Also, thyroid inflammation, or postpartum thyroiditis, may occur after childbirth and trigger hyperthyroidism, especially in women with type I diabetes. Fatigue and mood swings are often attributed to postpartum blues and ignored, so if these symptoms persist, be sure to contact your healthcare provider.
Sources of Iodine
If you want to ensure you get adequate iodine, it can be obtained from food or supplements. Iodine is also present in iodized table salt.
Iodine in Food
There are many iodine-rich foods. Shellfish and saltwater fish, such as tuna, are excellent sources of this trace mineral. Seaweed, namely nori, kelp, and dulse are high in iodine. Eggs and meat also contain iodine.
Dairy products made from cow’s milk, including yogurt, cheese, and ice cream, contain iodine foods, although by accident as well as by design. Many dairy farmers use an iodine-containing saline solution to clean the cow’s teats and collection equipment that can find its way into milk. Farmers also feed dairy cows grains that contain iodine.
Iodine occurs naturally in fruits and vegetables as a result of being taken up through the soil. However, its concentration in plants depends most on the region in which the produce was grown and the iodine content of that particular region’s soil.
Iodine in Salt
Iodized salt usually contains potassium iodide in the range of 76mcg per ¼ teaspoon of salt, as well as 580mg of sodium. However, because table salt carries health concerns, I recommend Himalayan crystal salt, which has variable levels of iodine, though it is not added unnaturally as iodized salt is. Be aware that processed foods, such as canned soups and vegetables, or packaged frozen meals, rarely contain iodized salt.
To ensure a regular and consistent supply of iodine, many people consider an iodine supplement to be among the most important of nutritional supplements. There are a few different forms, such as potassium iodide and sodium iodide.
I recommend nascent iodine, also known as nano-colloidal iodine or atomic iodine. The latter name refers to the incomplete number of electrons in its structure, resulting in the ability to hold an electromagnetic charge. The term “nascent” means new, freshly made, and applies to this form of supplement because it is produced via an electrolytic process. This proprietary method ensures a consumable form of iodine that the body readily absorbs and uses to maintain optimal iodine levels and to support thyroid health. The Japanese utility Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has received approval to operate reactors for the first time since the 2011 Fukushima meltdown.
On Wednesday, the Nuclear Regulation Authority said TEPCO’s two reactors in northern Japan met new and stricter safety standards.
The authority unanimously approved the draft certificate for reactors number 6 and 7 at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, marking the first step in the process toward restarting them. Portions of the plant’s reactors were damaged in a 2007 earthquake.
Much of the Japanese public is opposed to granting TEPCO permission to once again operate reactors, and rightfully so.
TEPCO was blamed for safety lapses in the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster after a major earthquake in March of 2011, and the tsunami that followed damaged the power supply and cooling system of three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, resulting in an unprecedented nuclear accident.
The area around the plant will be closed for the foreseeable future, with extremely high levels of radiation still being recorded in 2017.
TEPCO said in a statement that it will continue improving safety standards at its plants while focusing on Fukushima’s decommissioning in addition to compensation for the thousands of evacuees.

Tepco has confirmed it plans to release the radioactive material from the Fukushima plant into the ocean saying that the “decision has already been made”. The decision has an upset local fisherman who says the decision will kill their industry as a result of a massive loss of sea life.Under the controversial plan, which could be a massive environmental disaster, the radioactive material tritium, which is being used to cool reactors whose cooling systems were damaged in 2011 tsunami, will now be released into the ocean.

Record radiation level detected at Fukushima reactor “unimaginable,” could kill human from even brief exposure
Radiation levels inside a damaged nuclear reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan have hit a record high since the plant suffered a triple nuclear meltdown almost six years ago. The latest readings – described by experts as “unimaginable” – now pose a serious challenge as officials prepare to dismantle the disaster-hit facility safely.
Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), the plant’s operator, said atmospheric readings inside the containment reactor No 2 are as high as 530 sieverts an hour, which is far greater than the previous record of 73 sieverts an hour. Reactor No 2 is one of three reactors that experienced a nuclear meltdown when the plant was crippled by a huge earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. A one-square-meter hole created by melting nuclear fuel
Tepco said recent image analysis revealed a one-square-meter hole in the metal grating beneath the reactor’s pressure vessel. The hole was probably created by melting nuclear fuel that penetrated the vessel, Tepco’s spokesman Tatsuhiro Yamagishi told AFP. Also, for the first time since the disaster, images were released showing dark lumps beneath reactor No 2. Experts believe the dark matter to be melted uranium fuel rods.
Even though specially-made robots designed to probe the underwater depths around the reactors have previously crumbled and shut down due to the highly toxic conditions, Tepco intends to send another remote-controlled robot to check the actual conditions inside the containment vessel.
The robot, however, will not last long. They are designed to withstand exposure to a total of 1,000 sieverts, meaning it will only survive for less than two hours in the presence of these dangerously high radiation levels. Nonetheless, Tepco’s spokesman Tatsuhiro Yamagishi said that the captured images will offer very useful information regarding the actual conditions inside the reactor.
A huge challenge in the history of nuclear power
These extraordinary high readings will make it very hard, and dangerous, for thousands of workers involved in dismantling the power plant, a process expected to take about four decades. Furthermore, medical professionals have never considered dealing with this level of radiation in their work, an official of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences told Japan Today.
To give you an idea of the severity, radiation doses of only 0.1 sieverts already significantly increase the risk of cancer. A single dose of one sievert is enough to cause radiation sickness, nausea, infertility, loss of hair, and cataracts. Exposure to five sieverts could kill half of those exposed within a month while a single dose of 10 sieverts could prove fatal within weeks.
After six years, Tepco and its business partners at the Fukushima Daiichi plant have yet to identify the location and condition of melted fuel in the three most severely damaged nuclear reactors. As reported by The Guardian, “the government has now estimated the cost of decommissioning the plant and decontaminating the surrounding area, as well as paying compensations and storing radioactive waste, to rise to 21.5tn yen [or about $190 billion],” which is nearly double the estimate released in 2013.
Even if they manage to clean up this nuclear mess shortly, Yosuke Yamashiki, Doctor of Engineering from Kyoto University, told RT that the complete reduction of the radiation will take hundreds of thousands of years. A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck in Japan today triggering a tsunami warning where waves as high as 3 meters could crash the coast at any moment. There are already reports of one meter waves in some areas. Residents in and around Fukushima are fleeing the coast as panic sets in.
According to Asahi Shimbun, there were no immediate reports of injury or damage at 5:59 a.m. (time in Japan) and the Onagawa nuclear plant reported no damage.

According to an initial report by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit approximately 37 kilometers off the Japanese coast, east south-east from the city of Namie in the Fukushima prefecture just before 6am local time. The Japan Meteorological Agency, which issued the official tsunami warnings, reports the quake was relatively shallow, striking at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.

Television footage showed ships moving out to sea from Fukushima harbors, as the meteorological agency warned of a tsunami of 3 meters for Fukushima, where TEPCO’s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant was devastated in a March 2011 quake and tsunami.

The Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power facility has remained extremely vulnerable to a collapse of its remaining nuclear fuel rod pools, which were damaged in the 2011 tsunami that led to a nuclear facility meltdown.
Since that time, the nuclear fuel rod pools have still not been repaired. The fuel rods remain a grave risk to humanity, as a “criticality event” could release enormous clouds of radioactive material that circle the Northern Hemisphere, dropping radioactive elements such as Cesium-137 onto North America.

A massive 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Japan earlier this morning, Japan time. A ten-foot tsunami wave is expected to strike the coast of Japan within minutes or hours. The Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power facility is located there and was severely damaged in a 2011 tsunami event that led to a nuclear meltdown of some of the fuel rods.
Since 2011, the fuel rods have remained exposed to the open air, and Japanese nuclear officials stated that it would take “100 years” to solve the Fukushima nuclear fuel problem.
If the fuel rod pools fail, it will unleash massive radiological pollution across the Northern Hemisphere, polluting most of North America with radioactive isotopes such as cesium-137. This isotope falls onto soils and renders farm lands unusable for farming for 200 – 300 years (the half life of Cs-137 is 29 years).
