TCM niu bang zi Traditional Chinese Medicine herb proven to be a powerful anti-cancer agent

For their study, the researchers examined the pharmacological properties of niu bang zi and its ability to suppress the growth of colorectal cancer cells. They looked at how the fruit can inhibit cell growth, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), migration, and invasion of colorectal cancer cells. EMT refers to the process by which epithelial cells assume the characteristics of mesenchymal cells. These characteristics or phenotype include enhanced migratory capacity, invasiveness, and resistance to programmed cell death (apoptosis). While EMT is activated to help with tissue repair in the event of an injury, certain genomic changes within cells can also cause it to generate invasive cells that can spread to other organs.

Based on the results of in vitro testing using CT26 colorectal carcinoma cells, researchers found that niu bang zi can induce cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, which led to a decrease in CT26 cell proliferation. It also halted metastasis by increasing the expression of E-cadherin, an epithelial marker known for its tumor-suppressing activity. In addition, niu bang zi reduced the expression of the mesenchymal marker, N-cadherin, in CT26 cells. Previous studies have reported that N-cadherin is widely expressed in colorectal cancer cell lines, making it a potential prognostic predictor of colorectal cancer.

The researchers also found that niu bang zi could inhibit matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 activity, which caused a decrease in the invasion and migration capacity of CT26 cells. They associated this decrease with the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is considered to be the central regulator of energy homeostasis that balances nutrient supply and energy demand. It is also an important target in therapies designed to control diseases like metabolic syndrome and cancer.

“Collectively, this study demonstrates that [niu bang zi] inhibits the proliferation and metastatic properties of [colorectal cancer] cells,” the researchers concluded. The findings of this study are similar to those of other studies that investigated the relationship between TCM and colorectal cancer. For instance, a study published in JNCI Monographs revealed that the regular use of TCM herbal medicine can significantly improve the survival outcomes of patients with stage II or III colorectal cancer. The cohort study involved over 300 patients who were monitored over a five-year period.

The finding, which was part of an investigation made by researchers from Duke-NUS Medical School and the National University of Singapore, together with the Duke University School of Medicine and the Medical University of Vienna, is part of a unique approach explaining how reducing sugar can cause cancer cells to die.

The paper, which was published in the online journal Science Signaling, presented a novel cell death pathway through introducing how depriving cancer cells of sugar can trigger a reaction that causes them to die. This research builds on earlier scientific literature that indicates that cancer cells that quickly multiply need higher levels of sugar than healthy cells. In the study, researchers found that in specific cancer cells, the presence of low levels of sugar that are insufficient for providing energy may be used as a method to enhance the survivability of the cells. They then posited that this might be another effect that sugar has on cancer cells.

They also found that when cancer cells are deprived of sugar, this causes a reaction across the cancer cell membrane and leads to an increased intake of calcium ions into the cells, which causes them to die ultimately. For the study, they used two cancer cells: one that contained extra glucose and the other, which didn’t. Both samples were then exposed to a “two-pronged attack.” The first one was with STF-31, a compound that inhibits glucose transport into cells, and the second one was with thapsigargin, which increases the level of calcium in cells. The team found out the cancer cells that had that extra glucose in them were unaffected; however, those with limited reserves were killed off.

The team believes that this approach can be used in unique approaches to treating cancer. Initial tests in the study showed that depriving cancer cells of sugar and increasing the body’s calcium levels managed to destroy cancer cells while leaving the healthy ones unharmed. Also, only certain types of cancer cells were noted to have lost the capacity to maintain intercellular sugar levels after the treatment. Researchers believe that this only applies to cells which are sensitive to sugar deprivation.

“Because these phenomena are not seen in normal/healthy cells, this inability of some tumors to maintain intracellular glucose levels could be an unappreciated Achilles’ heel that might be therapeutically targeted,” the researchers wrote of the results, as it appeared in Cosmos. “A molecular signature of cancers with reduced ability to maintain intracellular glucose would help develop that strategy for clinical application.”

Of the results, the team plans to conduct further research to create possible treatment procedures from this approach in the future.

In their study, researchers from the University of Athens have found that just nine tablespoons of olive oil can greatly improve symptoms of erectile dysfunction by as much as 40 percent. This is much better than the effects given by sildenafil, a drug commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension.

The findings offer a novel approach to treating erectile dysfunction, a common form of sexual dysfunction in men. In particular, erectile dysfunction refers to the condition where a man has trouble getting or keeping an erection, especially during sexual intercourse. For most men, stress is a contributing factor for occasional erectile dysfunction; however, if the condition persists or becomes frequent, this could indicate the presence of a health problem that needs to be treated. It could also be a sign of emotional or relationship challenges that need to be addressed by a professional. According to data from the Boston University School of Medicine, about 10 percent of men aged 40–70 suffer from severe or complete erectile dysfunction while at least 5 percent of men below age 40 have some form of the condition. citrusA recent study made by researchers from Tohoku University in Japan revealed that citrus lovers are less likely to develop age-related cognitive impairment and dementia. In the study, which appeared in the Journal of Nutrition, the team found that older people who eat oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and limes, among others, can reduce their risk of developing dementia by over a quarter.

The study, which spanned for up to seven years, looked at data from over 13,000 older adults in Japan, which included their diet and brain health. During this time, the team examined their rate of consumption of citrus fruits and whether or not they have developed some form of cognitive impairment — including dementia. The results were positive: Researchers found a direct link between frequent consumption of citrus fruits and improved memory and brain health. Among the adults who were part of the study, those who ate lemons, limes, and oranges daily had decreased their chances of developing dementia by at least 23 percent, compared to those who just ate it less than twice a week. In addition, those who did not regularly eat citrus fruits were at risk of experiencing age-related cognitive decline.

Chemotherapy linked to mitochondrial dysfunction in skeletal muscle

In the study, researchers from the University of Vermont looked at whether chemotherapeutics for breast cancer impact skeletal muscle structure and protein expression.

  • The researchers involved 13 women diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing chemotherapy as part of their initial treatment after tumor resection. In addition, 12 healthy women took part as nondiseased controls.
  • An examination of those with breast cancer revealed reduced single-muscle fiber cross-sectional area and fractional content of subsarcolemmal and intermyofibrillar mitochondria.
  • The patients who had received chemotherapeutic drugs, in particular, doxorubicin and paclitaxel exhibited reductions in myosin expression, mitochondrial loss, and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in C2C12 murine myotube cell cultures. This supported initial findings on the role of chemotherapy in atrophic and mitochondrial phenotypes.
  • After the patients were treated with mitochondrial-targeted antioxidant MitoQ, researchers noted a drop in chemotherapy-induced myosin depletion, mitochondrial loss, and ROS production.
  • Patients who underwent chemotherapy also exhibited increased levels of peroxiredoxin 3, a mitochondrial peroxidase linked to reductions in muscle fibers.

Researchers concluded that chemotherapy can negatively affect skeletal muscle in patients undergoing therapy.

The study, led by RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, revealed that people who adopted an organic diet have seen a significant drop in pesticide exposure a week in their diet. In the study, researchers took urine samples from participants who were fed both an organic and a non-organic diet and looked for the presence of dialkyl phosphates, a class of compounds the body produces as it tries to break down organophosphate pesticides.

Organophosphate pesticides are widely used in commercial agriculture to control pests in fruits and vegetables, but they can also be found in flea and tick collars, shampoos, and powders for pets; treatments for head lice; and, no pest strips and pest control products for gardens. Despite its widespread usage, direct exposure to these pesticides carry severe health risks, especially for pregnant women. In addition, earlier studies have found that ingesting fruits and vegetables that have residual amounts of pesticides like organophosphates can lead to diminished IQs in children, as well as other dietary risks. Other studies have shown that children with high levels of residual pesticides in their bodies are more likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, known as ADHD.

Pesticides have also been linked to certain types of cancer, with multiple studies identifying both direct and residual exposures as a risk factor for environmentally induced cancer. In particular, organophosphate pesticides can increase the risk of breast cancer, where it can be transferred to babies through breast milk.

Unfortunately, much of the fruits are vegetables lined up in stores are riddled in pesticides. In its latest Dirty Dozen report, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found conventionally grown strawberries to have the highest levels of pesticide residues, compared to other fruits and vegetables. Vitamin D found to help sunburn from the inside by reducing swelling and inflammation

Vitamin DFor anyone who’s ever had a severe case of sunburn, this might be a good development for you – taking in high concentrations of vitamin D an hour after sunburn can be beneficial in alleviating its painful side-effects, according to a study. The results, which were from a double-blinded research made by a joint team from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, were published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

“We found benefits from vitamin D were dose-dependent,” according to Dr. Kurt Lu, a senior author on the study. “We hypothesize that vitamin D helps promote protective barriers in the skin by rapidly reducing inflammation. What we did not expect was that at a certain dose, vitamin D not only was capable of suppressing inflammation, it was also activating skin repair genes.”

A sample pool of 20 participants was used for this study. Each of the participants was randomized to receive either a between placebo pill or varying amounts of vitamin D (the study used 50,000; 100,000; and, 200,000 IU of the vitamin) an hour after they were subjected to a small ultraviolet (UV) lamp “sunburn” on their inner arm. Researchers conducted a follow-up of the participants 24, 48, 72 hours, and one week after the experiment and collected skin samples for testing.

The results indicated that participants who consumed the highest doses of vitamin D displayed long-lasting benefits, such as reduced skin inflammation two days after the burn. These participants also showed the least amount of redness in the skin, as well as an increased activity for skin repair.

According to the authors, this study is the first of its kind to describe the benefits of vitamin D as an anti-inflammatory agent. Moreover, previous studies have not provided enough evidence in this field, despite widespread claims of vitamin D deficiency. They were also able to study the vitamin helps with repairing skin. This is because vitamin D increases skin levels of the anti-inflammatory enzyme arginase-1. This help with tissue repair after damage and triggers other anti-inflammatory proteins.

Researchers also noted that the dosage used in the study are way above the daily allowances. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) puts the adult daily allowance at 400 IU. Still, the results open the possibility of using vitamin D for more intensive burns.

The finding, which was part of an investigation made by researchers from Duke-NUS Medical School and the National University of Singapore, together with the Duke University School of Medicine and the Medical University of Vienna, is part of a unique approach explaining how reducing sugar can cause cancer cells to die.

The paper, which was published in the online journal Science Signaling, presented a novel cell death pathway through introducing how depriving cancer cells of sugar can trigger a reaction that causes them to die. This research builds on earlier scientific literature that indicates that cancer cells that quickly multiply need higher levels of sugar than healthy cells. In the study, researchers found that in specific cancer cells, the presence of low levels of sugar that are insufficient for providing energy may be used as a method to enhance the survivability of the cells. They then posited that this might be another effect that sugar has on cancer cells.

They also found that when cancer cells are deprived of sugar, this causes a reaction across the cancer cell membrane and leads to an increased intake of calcium ions into the cells, which causes them to die ultimately. For the study, they used two cancer cells: one that contained extra glucose and the other, which didn’t. Both samples were then exposed to a “two-pronged attack.” The first one was with STF-31, a compound that inhibits glucose transport into cells, and the second one was with thapsigargin, which increases the level of calcium in cells. The team found out the cancer cells that had that extra glucose in them were unaffected; however, those with limited reserves were killed off.

The team believes that this approach can be used in unique approaches to treating cancer. Initial tests in the study showed that depriving cancer cells of sugar and increasing the body’s calcium levels managed to destroy cancer cells while leaving the healthy ones unharmed. Also, only certain types of cancer cells were noted to have lost the capacity to maintain intercellular sugar levels after the treatment. Researchers believe that this only applies to cells which are sensitive to sugar deprivation.

“Because these phenomena are not seen in normal/healthy cells, this inability of some tumors to maintain intracellular glucose levels could be an unappreciated Achilles’ heel that might be therapeutically targeted,” the researchers wrote of the results, as it appeared in Cosmos. “A molecular signature of cancers with reduced ability to maintain intracellular glucose would help develop that strategy for clinical application.”

Of the results, the team plans to conduct further research to create possible treatment procedures from this approach in the future.

Stressed-out cacao trees produce more nutritionally potent chocolate – new research

chocolateA bite of your favorite chocolate bar can take off the stress for most people – studies have already looked into it – but research has shown that putting cocoa trees under stress can lead to better-tasting chocolate. In particular, drought and other weather conditions have more impact on cocoa production than how the tree themselves are grown. The report, published in the American Chemical Society’s Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, detailed the impacts that different cultivation methods have in the chemical composition – as well as the flavor – of cocoa beans.

Chocolate is the most famous derivative of the Theobroma cacao L. tree, commonly referred to as either cocoa or cacao. Studies have revealed that regular consumption of cocoa protects against inflammation and oxidative stress. In the central nervous system, cacao was shown to improve blood flow to the brain, which can protect against neuronal injury. When used topically, it protects the skin from damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) light.

However, cocoa, when consumed in chocolate, can have adverse effects on a person – including weight gain and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Scientists have been quick to point that there is still benefit in consuming moderate amounts of cocoa or dark chocolate.

There are two different ways of growing cocoa. The first method, called agroforestry, involves raising cocoa trees in mixed groves. This allows the plants to receive cool air, as well as vital shade, allowing for a low-stress environment. The other method involves planting trees in singular, “monocultural,” groves, to produce more yield. This exposes trees to elevated levels of stress. To counter this effect, trees produce antioxidants to react against the stress and minimize the damage. However, the increased amount of antioxidants also affects the quality of the beans.

To understand the process behind it, researchers sampled beans from five different cocoa tree farms in Bolivia. The samples were collected from both monocultural groves and agroforest settings and were gathered at the beginning and the end of the dry season. Before its analysis, the beans were fermented and dried.

The researchers found only minor differences in the chemical composition between beans that were cultivated in an agroforest and a monocultural grove – with beans from the latter having more phenols and antioxidant compounds.

What they found to be significant, however, was the effect that weather has on the beans’ chemical composition. During the dry season, the rise in temperature causes soil moisture around the trees to drop. This lead to an increase in antioxidant levels in the beans, as well as reduction of its fat content.

The authors of the study said that these factors, which elevate the stress levels of the cocoa tree, can add to the variability of the flavors of cocoa beans.

The results of this study challenge assumptions made by climate change proponents about the possible extinction of cacao trees. According to them, the trees will die out as temperatures increase, causing warmer and drier conditions that will make cultivation of the trees impossible.

To counter the effects of these so-called “conditions,” the study has proposed using a new technology called CRISPR, which uses genetic modification to “develop cacao plants that don’t wilt or rot at their current elevations, doing away with the need to relocate farms or find another approach.”

This also puts the study at a slippery slope, as genetic modification – aside from being controversial – has some potential risks for both people and the environment. The dangers associated include the increased cases of autoimmune diseases, gastrointestinal problems, and chronic diseases, as well as its impact in the ecosystems where it is grown, with it being able to withstand increased amounts of pesticide than those growing around it.
